Lord, Teach Us to Pray

Luke 11:1-4

  1. Let's take a look at how Jesus prayed

    1. He withdrew Himself

      1. Luke 5:16 And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

      2. Privacy, no distractions

    2. He spent extended periods of time

      1. Luke 6:12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

      2. Consider that it is the first and most vital thing you must do

    3. He sometimes prayed alone

      1. Luke 9:18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him...

      2. There are some things we can only tell God alone

    4. And He sometimes prayed with others

      1. Luke 9:28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

      2. There are some things we should pray together about because it concerns them.

      3. As the work of the church, etc.

        1. Romans 15:30-33 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me; That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints; That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed. Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

      4. Prayer is the most vital work of the church – yet most neglected

  2. When ye pray...

    1. It should be immediate (first) and instinctive

      1. Some people are reluctant – don't want to bother God...

      2. Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

      3. We are to have confidence

        1. 1 John 5:15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

        2. “Every great movement of God can be traced to a kneeling figure.” - D. L. Moody

        3. He hears us and will grant whatever we ask as long as it is in His will.

          • John 14:13-14 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (14) If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

        4. Don't be anxious / worried / careful

          • Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (7) And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

    2. To Whom do I pray?

      1. To God the Father

        1. Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

      2. To God the Son

        1. Acts 7:59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

      3. To, and in God the Spirit

        1. Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

        2. Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (27) And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

  3. The first prayer – salvation

    1. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  4. What is your prayer life like?
