Life in the Spirit

Luke 4:1,2,13-15

1. Our greatest need is to be led and empowered by the Holy Spirit

   1. You may question His direction, but He is never wrong

   2. Jesus was led of the Spirit into the wilderness

      1. But it is here we see the Captain of our Salvation and our Source of life

         1. I need nothing apart from Christ – v.3,4

         2. I want nothing apart than Christ – v.6,7

         3. I have no reason to doubt Christ – v.12

   3. Reason we are led into temptations / trials: We must be tested

      1. Faith that has not been tested cannot be trusted

      2. Testing reveals weakness

      3. Example of Israel's testings

         1. Exodus 13:17-18 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: (18) But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.

         2. Lesson learned: they could do nothing apart from Christ.

   4. It is through these temptations that we will learn to walk, stand, fight

      1. Romans 5:1-5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (2) By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (3) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; (4) And patience, experience; and experience, hope: (5) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

2. The Holy Spirit will teach me not about Christ, but to know Christ

   1. Philippians 3:8-10 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, (9) And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: (10) That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

   2. John 16:7-14

      1. Nothing that he had seemed valuable after all – v.8

      2. All that he wanted was found in Christ – v.9

      3. There is no victory apart from Christ – v.10

3. The Holy Spirit wants you to know Christ, not about Christ

   1. To experience Christ – where He is living through you

   2. The Holy Spirit is our School Master

   3. I need nothing apart from Christ

   4. I want nothing apart than Christ

   5. I have no reason to doubt Christ
